Shillong: Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar admitted Wednesday that construction projects in New Shillong Township are lagging. Progress slowed down despite steady funding. The Deputy Chief Minister confirmed he will personally inspect the site on July 30 to push the pace.
Bad weather is the culprit. Heavy rain hampers outdoor construction. Meghalaya only offers a six to seven month working window each year. "It seems that the rainfall is disturbing some projects this year," Dhar said. He maintains that while some individual tasks face setbacks, every project remains within the broader project timeline.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma recently walked out of a review meeting regarding the new Legislative Assembly complex in Mawkasiang. He expressed frustration over the slow interior work inside the main hall. Contractors currently face various penalty clauses if they blow past official deadlines. The state has no cash flow issues. Money flows to contractors on schedule.
Multiple major builds are currently underway across the township. Work continues on the new Secretariat, the Legislative Assembly building, Unity Mall, the Mawkhanu Football Stadium, and a new parade ground.
