Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma toured several flagship infrastructure sites in the New Shillong Township on Tuesday. He demanded that officials hit their deadlines and maintain high construction standards. The Chief Secretary, the Commissioner and Secretary of the Urban Affairs Department, and various government officials joined him. Representatives from the executing agencies also tagged along.
Sangma inspected the New Secretariat Complex, the Unity Mall, and the Sports Complex at Umsawli. He wants the Secretariat finished on schedule. This facility will pull disparate government departments into one building. Officials believe this move will sharpen administrative efficiency and improve how the state serves its citizens.
The Unity Mall serves a different purpose. It creates a dedicated hub for local artisans, weavers, entrepreneurs, and self-help groups. The state expects this to drive tourism and secure long-term jobs. Nearby, the Umsawli Sports Complex aims to turn Meghalaya into a regional powerhouse. It will offer modern gear and spaces for young athletes to train.
Sangma told his teams to talk to each other and stick to safety rules. He wants the work done fast. He believes these sites represent a major shift for the state. "The projects being developed in New Shillong are laying the foundation for Meghalaya’s future. Investments in modern administrative, commercial and sports infrastructure will not only improve governance and public services but also generate economic opportunities, create employment and enhance the quality of life for the people of the state," Sangma said.
The Chief Minister remains focused on these goals. Citizens need better infrastructure now. He expects all agencies to clear the path for these developments.
