Shillong: Speaker Thomas A. Sangma confirmed Friday that supply chain chaos in West Asia has pushed back the completion of Meghalaya’s new Legislative Assembly building. Imported materials for high-tech audio-visual systems and specialized cabling are stuck in transit. These parts are sourced from the United States and handled by the same vendors who worked on Parliament.
Construction work on the structure finished, but installation of the remaining 10 percent of gear remains. Sangma refused to set a new deadline, citing past failures. "I have been giving deadlines for the last many months. This time I’m not going to open my mouth and eat those words again," he said.
Safety remains a priority. The complex faces a mandatory audit from IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee before anyone moves in. This follows a previous dome collapse at the site. Sangma conducted a surprise site inspection on Thursday to push the workforce forward. He insists the contractors are not at fault for the logistical pileup. The audit and installation will now happen at the same time to speed things up.
