Medical Experts Convene at Assam down town University for National Social Work Conference

Guwahati: Medical social workers, researchers, and healthcare professionals swarmed Guwahati on Wednesday. They gathered at Assam down town University for the 12th Annual National Conference of the All India Association of Medical Social Work Professionals. The event runs through October 1. It is a massive two-day push for better healthcare.

Faculty from the university teamed up with down town Hospital and the Indian Council of Social Science Research-North Eastern Regional Centre to host the event. The theme focuses on medical social work as a driver for the Viksit Bharat initiative. Experts are drilling down into mental health, ethics, and patient care.

Prof. Ashok Puranik, Executive Director of AIIMS Guwahati, kicked off the event. He told the crowd, "Addressing the social and psychological factors affecting patients" remains a vital goal for modern practice. Other speakers included Prof. Sonia Pereira Deuri of LGBRIMH and university Vice-Chancellor Prof. N.C. Talukdar. They pushed for tighter bonds between schools and hospitals.

Gariasi Dutta chaired the session while Dr. Prateeti Barman handled the welcome duties. Leadership from AIAMSWP and Dr. Udayan Baruah of down town Hospital also spoke. The team released the official souvenir and the group newsletter during the opening.

Technical sessions covered workforce training and professional standards. Experts from NIMHANS and King George’s Medical University joined panels on integrating mental health into the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Participants presented posters and research papers on indigenous knowledge and ethics. Four more technical sessions follow Thursday before the final closing ceremony.
