Guwahati: The two-day Bina Chowdhury Srimanta Sankardev Heritage Festival ended October 9 in Azara, Guwahati. Shrimanta Shankar Academy and Girijananda Chowdhury University hosted the event. The festival honored the life and philosophy of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev while memorializing the late Bina Chowdhury. It brought students, teachers, and artists together at the university campus.
Padma Shri awardee Jatin Goswami served as the chief guest for the opening. He pushed for younger generations to keep traditional practices alive. Kunki Choudhury of the Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society shared stories of Bina Chowdhury and the legacy of Sankardev. She also stated, "The establishment of the Centre for Srimanta Sankardev Studies at GCU" will proceed as a new initiative.
Events included inter-school quizzes, essay writing, art, and performances of Borgeet and Sattriya Nritya. Attendees joined workshops on Majuli mask-making and manuscript calligraphy. A panel featured writer Jyoti Khataniar and musician Arunabh Jyoti Malakar. They analyzed how Sankardev still influences modern Assamese literature, music, and social life.
The festival concluded by handing out the Srimanta Sankardev Heritage Awards. Nobin Hazarika led the Charaideo district’s Bokul Vrindabon Sanskriti Gosthi to receive an honor. Harshitaa Ray Choudhury from Guwahati also took home an award. Both winners earned recognition for keeping Sattriya culture and the artistic traditions of Sankardev alive.
