Assam artisan builds Durga idol from 7,000 discarded pens

Guwahati: Pradip Kumar Ghosh built a Durga idol using 7,000 expired ballpoint and marker pens. He lives in Panchmore, Ward No. 2 of Dhubri, Assam. The construction took him four months of steady work. This unique piece highlights environmental sustainability through art.

The idol will stand at the Durga Puja mandap organized by Usha Sangha. The site sits in Bishnu Palli, covering areas in Wards 11 and 12. Ghosh has practiced this unconventional craft since 1992. He previously sculpted figures using bicycle tubes, sugarcane residue, plastic bottles, and coconut fiber.

Ghosh wants to show that trash has value. He hopes his work pushes self-help groups and citizens to make new products from junk. He stated, "Discarded materials can be transformed into valuable creations rather than ending up as waste."

Dhubri readies itself for autumn festivities. The artist sent his well-wishes to the nation. He prayed to Goddess Durga for peace, protection, and the general well-being of the people.
