Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh opened the state’s first mechanised rotary parking facility on August 22. Located at Nagamapal near Chungkham Leirak Machin in central Imphal, the site marks the first of four planned projects. The state built the system under the Imphal Smart City Mission. It cost 8.4 crore rupees.
The vertical structure houses 42 four-wheelers and 70 two-wheelers. Four automated towers handle the vehicles. The system runs 24 hours a day with digital cashless payments, backup power, and computerised monitoring. City officials expect the tech to solve chronic congestion in the busy market district.
Chief Secretary Dr. Puneet Kumar Goel noted that urbanization and more cars have strained city space. Officials, including Thangmeiband MLA Khumukcham Joykisan Singh and Smart City CEO Thingbaijam Harikumar Singh, attended the launch. Joykisan Singh said the government started this project to address the longstanding parking problem.
During the event, Chief Minister Singh connected the state's progress to internal stability. He said, "development in the state was closely linked to peace and emphasised the need for dialogue among communities to create an environment conducive to development." He urged local residents and bazaar community members to work together to keep the facility running well. Joykisan Singh added that the government intends to fix water shortages in the Thangmeiband constituency and also welcomed the restart of local bus services.
