Imphal: Manipur Police arrested JFD Finance Secretary Sunil Karam at his home around 9 pm on August 19. Officers took him into custody during a crackdown on an ongoing agitation. The JFD currently demands that the state conduct a census only after updating the National Register of Citizens. The arrest sparked immediate outrage.
Soibam Chitarani, president of the Kwakeithel Lamdong Leikai Meira Paibi, condemned the move during a protest meeting at Line No. 7. She accused the government of missing the mark. Chitarani claimed that detaining activists while failing to stop those fueling community divisions will only invite more trouble. "Arrest of JFD leader shows government’s failure to protect people’s future," she stated.
Chitarani urged the public to stay vigilant. She warned that the government's current path will likely drive further resentment across the state. The administration should prioritize unity, she argued, rather than attacking those who seek to defend the younger generation. Her group remains opposed to any official measures that ignore the core aspirations of the people.
