Imphal: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation pushed into its third day of protests. Members held street corner meetings across Manipur to force an update of the National Register of Citizens before the next Census. The group argues that conducting a count without removing illegal immigrants threatens indigenous political rights and economic stability.
Leaders Sougrakpam Sumati and W. Phulka rallied crowds at Khumbong Bazaar, Lamshang Keithel, Kwakeithel, Lamphel Super Market, and Nagamapal Line. P. Sanahanbi and Ch. Shyamson managed concurrent events in Sagolmang, Pangei, Khabam Lamkhai, Koirengei, and Sekmai. They face a fractured state. Internal violence has raged since May 3, 2023.
Many displaced families remain unable to return home. Roads are still blocked. The JFD points to Clause 3 of the Census Act, 1948, as a legal path to delay the count until peace returns. They previously joined other civil groups at the Manipur Press Club to set a firm deadline. The government must confirm the NRC will finish before the Census by August 6. Failure to act will trigger further escalation. The group urged the public to host local sit-ins, stating, "NRC Updation Before Census."
