Local resident builds bridge to slash school commute in Assam

Guwahati: A local resident in Assam’s Dhubri district built a makeshift bridge that slashed daily travel times for students, teachers, and villagers. The structure serves the remote Baghmara char area. It replaces boat journeys that previously took up to two hours during monsoon floods.

Construction wrapped up in just two weeks. Crossing the river now takes roughly two minutes. Before this, people spent 30 minutes on the water, plus another 10 to 15 minutes loading vehicles onto boats. The project makes trips to Gauripur, Asharikandi, and Dhubri town much faster.

A Facebook post by Uttam Axom drew attention to the project. One educator, a Teachers’ Eligibility Test teacher posted to a school in Dhubri, praised the work. The teacher, who is originally from Dhemaji, noted the importance of the fix. Teachers serving in the area remain dedicated to the job. They confirmed, "Teachers have also acknowledged the support of local guardians, while reiterating their commitment to providing quality education to children despite the geographical challenges."

The community initiative drew heavy praise online. It shows how local action can solve hard infrastructure problems in riverine regions.
