Guwahati: Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan laid the foundation for Rs 110 crore in infrastructure projects at Gauhati University on September 7. This investment marks the first phase of a broader Rs 250 crore commitment from the Assam government. The development includes a new multidisciplinary academic building, a boys hostel, a modern mess, and an international students hostel. Crews will also renovate the K.K. Handique Library seminar hall and upgrade the Birinchi Kumar Barua Auditorium. The plans feature new residential quarters for Grade-D staff.
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma joined the Vice President at the university. Radhakrishnan lauded the institution, which earned NAAC A+ accreditation and currently holds the ninth spot among State Public Universities in the NIRF 2025 rankings. Established in 1948 following a public movement led by Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi, the school remains a cornerstone of the Northeast. The Vice President praised the school's research efforts covering the Brahmaputra Basin, endangered languages, and environmental sustainability. He noted, "The Brahmaputra as an ecological, economic and civilisational force."
Radhakrishnan signaled his desire to bridge cultural gaps. He asked universities in Tamil Nadu to translate Assamese texts, mirroring the university's current work translating Tamil literature. During the ceremony, the Vice President released the book Bhupen Hazarika: Hundred Years of a Wandering Song, edited by Ankuran Dutta and Nani Gopal Mahanta. He also unveiled the fifth revised edition of Chandrakanta Abhidhan. Students performed a cultural program to close the event. Radhakrishnan wrapped up his two-day visit to the state afterward, with Chief Minister Sarma seeing him off at the Sarusajai Stadium.
