Guwahati: Persistent downpours triggered a series of landslides in Guwahati on July 20. Rocks and mud buried the main approach road to the Kamakhya Temple. A massive tree fell, choking traffic and cutting off local communication lines.
District officials swarmed the site to clear the debris. The road remains a work in progress. Further slides struck a home in the Madhabdev Nagar neighborhood of Maligaon. The home belongs to Ranjit Das.
Four family members suffered minor injuries when the slope gave way. Medics treated the group shortly after the collapse. Officials remain on high alert. The India Meteorological Department expects more rain, leaving local authorities worried about the stability of hill slopes. "Authorities have urged residents living in landslide-prone areas to remain alert as the India Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in the coming days." Crews are currently working to clear the roads and monitor vulnerable spots across the city.
