Guwahati: Guwahati faces a deluge. The Regional Meteorological Centre of the India Meteorological Department issued a storm warning for the city and surrounding areas on Sunday, August 16. The alert spans from 8.30 am today until 8.30 am on August 17.

Expect light to moderate rain paired with lightning and thunder. Rainfall could hit 6 cm, though isolated spots may see heavy showers between 7 cm and 11 cm. This weather threatens to cause major headaches. Expect waterlogging in low-lying spots and underpasses. Traffic will crawl. Power grids and civic services face potential disruption.

Strong winds might topple trees. The office warned of a "high likelihood of landslides, landslips and mudslides in vulnerable areas." Operations for boats and ferries remain at risk if conditions sour. The RMC advises residents to stay alert, avoid slippery roads, and find safe shelter during strikes. Officials urge locals to skip travel through flooded areas and keep tabs on traffic updates until the warning expires.

Forecasters expect the heavy downpours to cut visibility across the city, making roads even more treacherous. Officials are telling locals to scrap all unnecessary travel until the weather breaks.

Residents living in high-risk zones need to pay extra attention. The department explicitly told people to steer clear of areas prone to slides and mud, not just avoid flooded streets.
