Shillong: Hynniewtrep Youth Council members gathered outside the office of the North-Eastern Hill University Vice-Chancellor today. The group demands the immediate resignation of Vice-Chancellor-in-Charge Prof Saroj Kanta Barik. Protesters claim his appointment violates the NEHU Act. They argue the post belongs to the university's senior-most professor.

The Ministry of Education issued an order on July 22 approving Barik for the role. The President of India, acting as the Visitor of NEHU, signed off on the move. Barik works in the Department of Botany and serves as the second senior-most professor. He took the reins after the term of the previous leader, Shukla, ended on July 26. The government aims to maintain administrative continuity until a permanent replacement is found.

HYC leadership intends to confront the official regarding these concerns. Leaders stated, "The organisation questioned the process followed in appointing Prof Barik and demanded that the issue be addressed in accordance with the provisions of the Act." Their next move depends on the results of that upcoming meeting.
