Shillong: Protesters from the Hynniewtrep Youth Council swarmed the North-Eastern Hill University office on Friday. They want Prof Saroj Kanta Barik out. The group claims his appointment as Vice-Chancellor-in-Charge violates the university's governing rules. HYC leaders argue the role belongs to the senior-most professor, not the second senior-most faculty member from the Department of Botany.
The Ministry of Education triggered this storm with an order on July 22. It confirmed that the President of India, acting as the university visitor, approved the appointment to replace former Vice-Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla. His term ended July 26. The move aims to keep administration steady while officials hunt for a permanent replacement. But the protesters are not buying the official justification.
The group slammed the decision as an "illegal" appointment. They are now demanding immediate corrective action to align with the NEHU Act. HYC representatives plan to corner Prof Barik for a direct meeting soon. They will decide their next move after hearing what he has to say.
