Heavy Vehicles Diverted as Kohima Highway Sinks

Kohima: Kohima District Magistrate B Henok Buchem ordered immediate traffic restrictions Tuesday at the Phesama Sinking Zone. The move follows continuous road subsidence and falling debris between chainage Km 191+840 and Km 192+100 on the Kohima-Mao section of National Highway-2. Heavy trucks face bans. The road is unstable.

Kohima Traffic Police will hold heavy commercial vehicles bound for Manipur or Jakhama at Peducha in the Sechu Zubza sub-division. Police will release these vehicles only as road conditions allow. Authorities advised drivers headed to Manipur to take the alternate route through Peren District. Emergency corridors include the Kohima-Jessami and Chakhabama-Zunheboto roads.

Light motor vehicles must use the Phesama-Kisama-Kigwema route via Rhododendron Resort. The Executive Engineer of R&B South Division maintains this path. The NHIDCL PMU-Jakhama must start restoration work daily at 6:00 AM to clear debris and stabilize the ground. The official order warned that “All measures have been taken in the interest of public safety and to prevent further accidents.”

Officials prohibited pedestrians from crossing the landslide area. The ground remains dangerous. Authorities stressed that these rules protect local travelers from further accidents.
