Officials Launch Safety Drive at Kohima Sinking Zone

Kohima: Kohima Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem led a team of officials to inspect the sinking zone on National Highway-2 on July 30. The site spans Chainage Km 191+840 to Km 192+100 on the Kohima-Mao section. He brought along Senior Superintendent of Police Krodi Rhetso and representatives from the PWD, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, the Southern Angami Public Organization, and the Phesama Village Council.

Rocks fall here. Officials plan to station heavy machinery at the stretch to keep debris clear and traffic moving. They will also set up two lighting units and warning placards at both ends of the zone to help drivers spot hazards. Traffic police will man the site to manage the flow of vehicles.

Buchem warned that safety is the priority. Debris clearing happens daily, but a full-day operation is set for Sunday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Commuters should use the alternative route via Kisama, particularly at night. The Deputy Commissioner stated: "They were encouraged to take timely decisions, including temporary road closure whenever necessary, in the interest of public safety."

Site crews must keep in touch with the District Administration and Police. The goal is to keep the road open while protecting everyone on the move.
