Kohima: Rocks and debris stalled traffic on the Kohima-Mao section of National Highway-2 Saturday afternoon. Boulders tumbled into the Phesama Sinking Zone, forcing police to halt vehicles and redirect them to an alternative route. It was a temporary closure.
The Additional Superintendent of Police for Protocol and Traffic confirmed workers cleared the road. Traffic is moving again. Still, authorities keep personnel on site to watch for more movement in the unstable ground. Locals remain wary of the recurring danger.
"Rocks and debris continue to fall despite repeated clearance operations," one resident noted. This citizen warned drivers to find other ways to travel whenever possible.
On Friday, the Kohima district administration issued a travel advisory for the stretch between Chainage Km 191+840 and Km 192+100. Adverse weather caused this section of the road to shift. Officials urged motorists to use caution, skip non-essential trips during heavy rain, and avoid night travel. Drivers must follow all instructions from the ground crews monitoring the slope.
