Kohima: Heavy rains sparked new landslides at the Phesama sinking area on National Highway 2 this Wednesday. The slides crippled the Kohima to Mao road section. Authorities halted heavy vehicle traffic entirely to ensure safety. Officials allowed some heavy vehicles through at 3:00 PM, but the route slammed shut again for the night.
Constant debris and active clearing work forced the closure. DSP of Traffic for Kohima, Solevi Metha, ordered all light vehicles to divert through the Phesama-Kisama/Kigwema route via the Rhododendron Resort. The district administration confirmed that traffic flow remains restricted for heavy trucks.
PS Pandey, Deputy General Manager of the Nature Division for NHIDCL, reported that the ground has been shifting for four days. His crews clear the road daily, yet falling rocks still block the path. Pandey confirmed that permanent fixes are coming. "We have already prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the entire Kohima-Mao stretch, and it is in the final stage," he said.
Villagers from Phesama provided food to passengers stuck on a bus trapped near the site. Meanwhile, district officials cleared other trouble spots along NH 2. Crews finished work at the Dzudza river, Liezocha, and Kezanu by 9:00 AM.
