Guwahati: Guwahati police detained two men early Saturday for painting a mural of activist Sonam Wangchuk on a public wall. A night patrolling team caught Nakul Mili of Dibrugarh and Gaurav Singh of Dakshin Gaon in the act near the Jyoti Bishnu Bhawan on Friday night. The portrait remained unfinished when officers intervened.
Dispur Police registered an FIR under Case No. 524/26. Authorities stated that painting public property requires prior approval. The duo violated a directive from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the defacement of public infrastructure. Officers will release the men after they sign notices to appear before the investigating officer.
Police are also tracking down the people behind a separate, unauthorized portrait of Wangchuk painted on a pillar under the Basistha flyover. A second case is active at the Basistha Police Station. A police officer noted, "Unauthorised paintings on flyovers, walls and other public structures have become more frequent, prompting authorities to take a stricter approach to such incidents."
The crackdown follows the July 10 directive from Sarma forbidding unauthorized artwork on city infrastructure. Officials warn that future offenders face stronger legal consequences, including potential imprisonment.
