Guwahati: Guwahati police detained two men Saturday for painting an unauthorized mural of activist Sonam Wangchuk on a public wall. A night patrol team caught Nakul Mili of Dibrugarh and Gaurav Singh of Dakshin Gaon in the act. They were working near the Jyoti Bishnu Auditorium in Khanapara on Friday night. The mural remained unfinished.

Dispur Police filed an FIR under Case No. 524/26. Authorities confirmed the duo will face legal proceedings. They will be released only after receiving notices to appear before an investigating officer. DCP Hiranya Barman noted the pair admitted to the deed during questioning.

Officials are also investigating a separate portrait found on a pillar beneath the Basistha Flyover. Police have registered a second case at the Basistha Police Station to identify those responsible. Authorities are cracking down. The state maintains a zero-tolerance policy for defacing government infrastructure.

This push follows a July 10 directive from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He banned unauthorized artwork on public structures after the removal of a mural depicting singer Zubeen Garg caused public outcry. Officials warned that future violators could face imprisonment. A police officer stated, "No one is permitted to paint or deface public or government property without prior permission."

Meanwhile, the activist at the center of the dispute remains in the news. Reports from Delhi indicate Sonam Wangchuk was moved to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday after his health slipped during a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. Separately, a woman was detained in Delhi after throwing ink at CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke near the protest site.
