Guwahati Airport Upgrades Landing System to Beat Monsoon Fog

Guwahati: Guwahati airport boosted its landing safety on Tuesday, August 1. Crews commissioned a 570-metre Precision Approach Lighting System. The new setup replaces a shorter 180-metre version. It helps pilots see the runway earlier during thick fog or heavy rain.

Bad weather stalls flights here often. The extra lights guide pilots toward the runway centre line. This ensures consistent performance during risky approaches. Officials confirmed the work followed strict aviation safety and regulatory standards. The project required extensive planning, installation, calibration, and final testing.

This upgrade serves a larger goal. The airport wants to fix its airside infrastructure to keep the Northeast connected. "The newly commissioned system will help pilots identify the runway environment earlier during approach and maintain proper alignment with the runway centre line," the official statement said. Electrical systems and photometric performance now meet modern benchmarks for better operational efficiency.
