Guwahati: Guwahati’s Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport Terminal 2 now ranks among the world’s most beautiful airports for 2026. The Prix Versailles recognized the structure for blending modern architecture with the natural heritage of Assam. Designers modeled the facility after the kopou phool, or foxtail orchid, and local bamboo forests.

The terminal features concrete columns covered in bamboo cladding. Inside, travelers watch digital displays of local biodiversity. Adani Airport Holdings Limited, which manages the site, used 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo in the build. Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the terminal in December 2025. Flights started moving passengers through the gates in March 2026.

Guwahati joins a prestigious list of honorees. This group includes Navi Mumbai International Airport, China’s Guangzhou Airport, Germany’s Frankfurt Airport, and the Pittsburgh International Airport in the USA. Both the Guwahati and Navi Mumbai facilities fall under the Adani portfolio. The design first appeared at the February 2025 Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment Summit.

Travelers approve. They snap photos of the pillars and lounge. "It is an absolute delight. Compared to the old airport, this is a huge transformation. It can now compete with airports in Mumbai, Bengaluru and other major cities," said Guwahati resident Sasanka Bordoloi.

The facility handles more than just aesthetics. It offers DigiYatra processing and smart check-in systems. The site expects to host 13.1 million passengers every year by 2032. It turns a transit stop into a regional landmark.
