Guwahati: The Assamese film industry is waking up. Severe flooding in Upper Assam recently forced a total production freeze, but the box office is finally moving again. The big-budget movie NRC: Nalparar Ram Chandra hits screens state-wide on September 25, 2026. It is a comeback.
Writer Bedabrat Borah designed the film to mix socio-political themes with comedy. The story centers on a woman forced to flee her home during a flood. She settles elsewhere and gives birth to a boy, Kaushalendra. He grows up obsessed with Bhaona, the traditional Assamese Vaishnavite theater, specifically finding peace in the character of Lord Rama. Years later, the government’s National Register of Citizens process traps him in a bureaucratic nightmare. He fights to find legacy data and prove he is an Indian citizen.
The title carries dual meanings. Borah notes the film is based on real events surrounding NRC updates, yet the team added the subtitle Nalparar Ram Chandra to capture the protagonist's personal journey. "I truly hope the audience connects with and enjoys the film," Borah said. The movie serves as a metaphorical take on identity, where the acronym stands for both the legal document and the boy’s story.
Production kicked off in 2024 across Golaghat and wrapped in 2025. NK Media produced the project under the direction of debutant Nanan Pachani. Nipon Kumar Talukdar produced the work, with Dipak Borah serving as executive producer and Uday Bhaskar Patar as chief assistant director.
Siddhartha Sharma steps into his first lead role, while Jayanta Bhagawati makes his long-awaited return to acting. The cast also includes Upakul Bordoloi, Jolly Laskar, Ashim Krishna Boruah, Manoj Saikia, Pankaj Mahanta, and Boibhabi Goswami. Musical icon Zubeen Garg contributed to the score, which was composed by Arupjyoti Baruah, Pranay Dutta, and Arnab Bashistha.
The technical team includes cinematographer Pradip Daimary and editor Manas Kashyap. Additional support came from art director Shivam Saikia, makeup artist Kamal Talukdar, and costume designer Juri Kalita. Sound design was handled by Kingshuk Moran, with lyrics provided by Paplu Chetia, Danish Ahmed, and Rahul Gautam Sharma. VFX artist Ratul Dutta and colorist Rajesh Yadav rounded out the post-production crew.
