Guwahati: Guwahati officials are clearing the streets. Starting September 1, a ban on street vending hits MS Road and HB Road in the crowded Fancy Bazar district. Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai led the push during a recent meeting at the Kamrup (Metro) District Commissioner’s office. He wants better traffic flow. The move aims to unclog the district and open up room for pedestrians.
Commercial trucks face new rules. They can only enter MS Road, HB Road, and SS Road between 9 pm and 7 am. Public parking remains allowed on these routes. Handcarts and pushcarts keep their spots for now. SS Road is included in the new plan, but officials have yet to set a date for the vending ban there. Rai told department heads to work together to ensure the changes do not hurt honest business owners. The administration stated, "The measures are aimed at improving traffic flow, reducing roadside congestion and creating more space for pedestrians in Fancy Bazar, one of Guwahati’s busiest commercial areas."
