Giant Monitor Lizard Rescued From Cachar Home

Guwahati: A massive Bengal monitor lizard hunkered down under a bed in a Cachar district home this Sunday. Residents of Siddheshwar Part-II village sounded the alarm after hearing strange noises inside the house on the morning of August 23. Gitu Malakar alerted local authorities, eventually pulling in village panchayat president Ripon Roy to handle the situation.

A crew from the Shialtek Beat Office arrived shortly after to clear the reptile out. Assistant Beat Officer Sadhan Das led the operation, working to extract the creature without injury. The team succeeded after a long, tense effort. Forest personnel saved the lizard, but the community remains on edge. This marks the second time in 23 days that a giant monitor lizard has turned up in the area. Local officials noted the recent trend, stating, "The repeated presence of the reptiles has generated curiosity as well as concern among residents, particularly those living close to areas where such wildlife may be found."
