Guwahati: The Assam Forest Department is taking students out of the classroom and into the woods. They launched the Nameri Wild Classroom at the Nameri Tiger Reserve to provide hands-on experience with nature. Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah promoted the initiative on X, calling for schools and colleges to sign up.

Students from Class VIII through college are eligible for the two and three-day residential trips. Participants will study forest life away from textbooks. They will learn birdwatching, wildlife tracking, and forest walks while studying the ecology of the Jia-Bharali river. The schedule includes rafting and sessions on local community traditions.

Naturalists and forest staff will lead every session. Each student must keep a field journal to record their findings and will get a certificate after finishing the course. Mallabaruah wants kids to value their environment. He stated, "The best lessons aren’t taught inside four walls."

Educators interested in the program should email outreach.namerinptr@gmail.com or send a WhatsApp message to 9401822244. The department expects this program to build a deeper connection to the local ecosystem.
