Shillong: The Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People and its campus cell took their fight to Education Minister Lakhmen Rymbui on September 7. They detailed a litany of administrative failures at Tura Government College. The school is breaking at the seams. Overcrowding plagues both the morning and day shifts, leaving students without seats or space.
The group’s petition spelled out the dire conditions. "Due to the continuous increase in students, seating capacity in the day shift is insufficient, forcing many into the morning shift. However, morning shift students face a shortage of both classrooms and lecturers," the letter stated. Faculty members are in a bind. Lecturers report going six months without a single paycheck.
The FKJGP wants immediate action. They are pushing for the minister to regularize morning shift staff, guarantee job security, and fix the pay structure. The demands also target the crumbling campus infrastructure. The college needs new buildings, a library overhaul with digital tools, and upgraded science laboratories stocked with chemicals. Basic sanitation is also missing. The group insists on clean drinking water, separate restrooms for boys and girls, and a functional canteen to serve the student body.
