Agartala: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman praised Tripura Gramin Bank for backing grassroots business growth. She pointed to Bulti Debnath Datta, a single mother from South Tripura, as a prime example of the bank’s impact. The bank is doing more than hitting targets. It finds imaginative, innovative ways to help people build real livelihoods.
Bulti launched her cement and rod manufacturing unit in Maheshpur, Belonia, back in 2017. She first borrowed 3 lakh rupees from the bank in 2019. After paying that off, she secured another 3 lakh rupees in 2023. She returned to the bank in 2024 to grab a 7 lakh rupee loan under the Tarun category of the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana. The bank’s cash helped her buy a delivery vehicle and hire five workers.
Her business now provides RCC pillars, filters, and ventilators to 10 to 12 panchayats in the Hrishyamukh block. Her work supports local projects including those under MGNREGA. Bulti now supports two daughters and her in-laws alone. During a national interaction with beneficiaries, Sitharaman noted the success. "I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Tripura Gramin Bank," she said.
Tripura Gramin Bank operates under the sponsorship of Punjab National Bank. The MUDRA scheme provides collateral-free credit to small firms. Tarun category loans offer between 5 lakh and 10 lakh rupees. Sitharaman believes these rural banks are vital for expanding credit access to small entrepreneurs across the country.
