Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein wants a special economic package for his state. He made the push Saturday in New Delhi. He spoke at the Financing India’s Journey Towards a Viksit Bharat conference held at Bharat Mandapam. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary attended the event.
Mein told the room the state faces major hurdles. Terrain is rough. Transportation costs bite hard. The monsoon season drags on, limiting how long crews can work on building projects. These factors drive up operational expenses in remote, hilly areas. He also pointed out the state lacks access to externally aided funds.
The state economy remains small compared to national giants, yet it holds the title of largest state in the Northeast by land area. Despite these setbacks, the government claims it keeps the books clean. Mein said, "The state’s fiscal deficit had remained within the prescribed limits and that there had been no defaults in meeting salaries, pensions, other committed liabilities or debt-related obligations."
He pointed to the state’s adherence to the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act. Officials are pumping money into infrastructure, power, healthcare, and education. These investments aim to boost economic activity and grow local sectors. The two-day conference brings together ministers and economists to hash out better fiscal strategies for the country.
