Guwahati: Nearly Rs 9 lakh vanished from a dead woman's account in Assam. The suspicious activity centers on the Jakhalabandha Post Office in Kaliabor. Dipamoni Saikia died in March 2024, yet her savings account remained active. Her son discovered the loss after checking records with her death certificate in hand.
Withdrawals occurred in several installments between June and December. Records show a Rs 4 lakh withdrawal on June 28, followed by Rs 3 lakh in July, Rs 1 lakh in August, and Rs 41,000 in December. Only Rs 8,000 remains in the account. The family insists Saikia could not have authorized these transactions.
The victim's son suspects staff involvement. He officially accused employees of orchestrating the fraud. "The family has questioned how withdrawals could have been made from the account of a woman who had died in March 2024 and who could not have authorised the transactions."
Local police took notice. Personnel from the Jakhalabandha Police Station arrived at the post office to secure evidence. Detectives are now vetting both staff members and local agents to see who dipped into the funds. An FIR is currently driving the investigation.
