Shillong: East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh confirmed the state government is moving through legal channels to clear hawkers from Laitumkhrah roads. The adviser to the MDA-II government rejected claims that officials have made no progress on the dispute. She said the state refuses to rush the process to avoid mistakes made during past eviction attempts.
The government set up a formal consultation platform for all stakeholders to identify suitable vending sites. Authorities have already served relocation notices to hawkers occupying public pathways. Lyngdoh stated, "The government does not want conflict on the streets."
Legal proceedings are currently underway. The court remains involved to ensure compliance with laws protecting both vendor livelihoods and resident rights. Lyngdoh insisted the government is not stripping vendors of their income. She called for a balance between keeping footpaths accessible and respecting the constitutional rights of the local population. The local Dorbar and residents have maintained patience as the law takes its course.
