Shillong: Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma hit out at the Meghalaya government over its handling of the recent unrest in Shillong. Petrol bombs hit the capital recently. Public property suffered damage. The Congress lawmaker claims the flare-ups show a broken state system.
Sangma questioned why the administration ignores public grievances until they turn violent. He asked why the government is not hearing, or if there is a genuine issue at play. "When people are agitated, people are angered, that means something is wrong in the system itself," Sangma said.
The MP made his stance on the chaos clear. He does not back the violence or the destruction of property. He urged citizens to use better judgment, but he insisted the state must study the roots of the anger. Ignoring the truth will backfire. Continued instability threatens to kill the local tourism economy, which grew after the decline of groups like the HNLC and GNLA.
Small business owners face ruin if the unrest persists. Sangma wants a full review of past and present governance. He connected the violence to broader issues like mining, environmental policy, and the protection of indigenous communities. "I’m not supporting any agitation, I’m not supporting any wrongdoings, but I support the truth," he said. He maintains that keeping the peace requires solving the underlying problems, not just policing the streets.
