Kohima: Dimapur District Congress Committee workers gathered outside Congress Bhavan on August 14 to protest a ritual performed at a Haldwani rally site. Someone held a purification ceremony there after party president Mallikarjun Kharge visited. The act sparked outrage. Protesters condemned the mindset behind the move.
The group argued the ritual insulted human dignity and violated constitutional values. The All India Congress Committee called the incident an affront to the fraternity guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. Speakers at the protest insisted that caste discrimination and untouchability have no place in a democratic nation.
Participants carried signs demanding equality and respect. They held banners reading, No to Untouchability, Yes to Equality, Human Dignity Is Not Negotiable, and One Constitution, One Equality, One India. The committee clarified that the protest targeted humiliation and bigotry rather than any specific religion or community.
The DCC reaffirmed its support for Kharge while pledging to defend the rights of every citizen. The group issued a final statement during the event: "No to discrimination. No to untouchability. Yes to equality, dignity and constitutional democracy." They argued that India finds its true strength in diversity.
