Kohima: Sixty-one Indian National Congress workers in Mokokchung district quit their posts on July 21. They sent a joint resignation letter to the AICC president. The group included NPCC and DCC officials, Mahila and Youth leaders, the Minority Department chairman, and the Seva Dal chief organiser. These members blamed the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee leadership for what they called autocratic functioning and mismanagement. They claimed recent actions fueled chaos and factionalism, forcing them to quit rather than stay silent while the party organization crumbled.
The mass exit looked like a major blow. The party struggled to regain power in Nagaland for years. It stayed alive during the 2015 near-extinction period, but these workers said they had finally reached their limit.
By July 22, the story shifted. DCC Mokokchung Vice-President Nukshi I Ozukum held a press conference to claim the resignation list contained forged signatures. The committee identified 12 names added without consent. Three people appeared at the briefing to deny they ever resigned. “The DCC strongly condemns this,” Ozukum said, promising to investigate the matter until the end.
Ozukum denied any leadership row. He argued the recent firing of the local president followed AICC guidelines set in Ahmedabad last year to prepare for 2029 elections. He noted the former president was over 70, failing age criteria set during a national organizational overhaul. Ozukum maintained that all frontal organizations in the district remain active and fully intact.
