Brazil Trims Diplomatic Staff Amid Escalating Spats with Argentina

Shillong: Brazil is scaling back its diplomatic footprint in Argentina. The government issued the order Tuesday following relentless insults directed at President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This marks the first time in recent history that regional tensions have forced such a drastic move between these neighboring nations.

A spokesperson for Brazil’s foreign office confirmed Javier Milei called Lula “a thief” three times since Sunday. Milei repeated the specific insult on July 25 during a party convention for Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro. That event served as a platform for more political hostility. Milei also took aim at Brazil's judiciary, labeling Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes “trash” during his remarks.

The tension peaked after de Moraes denied Milei’s request to visit former President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro currently sits under house arrest while serving a 27-year sentence for a coup attempt. Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of the former president, is set to challenge Lula in the upcoming October election.
