Agartala: Tripura officials sent 600 premium Kew pineapples to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman this week. The fruit crossed the border on Wednesday. The delivery occurred at the Agartala-Akhaura Integrated Check Post. The gift reciprocates a recent shipment of mangoes sent from Bangladesh to Tripura.
Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Secretary Apurba Kumar Roy oversaw the handoff at the zero point. He handed the shipment to representatives of the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chattogram. The group included Assistant Consular Officer Pankajjyoti Das and official Sajib Chakraborty. The fruit then moved onto a Bangladeshi vehicle for transport to Dhaka.
The shipment contained 100 cartons holding six pineapples each. Each individual fruit weighed approximately 780 grams. Officials selected the Kew variety because the season for the state's GI-tagged Queen pineapples finished in July. Kew pineapples are harvested during July and August.
Roy emphasized the importance of the ongoing agricultural exchange. "In response to the Bangladesh prime minister’s gift of delicious mangoes to our chief minister, we have sent 100 packets of Kew variety pineapples, containing over 600 fruits, to the prime minister and the people of Bangladesh through the Akhaura Integrated Checkpost," Roy said. He noted that the state aims to introduce the export-quality produce to new consumers in the neighboring country.
Several officials managed the logistical process at the border. These included Agriculture Director Dr. Phanibhushan Jamatia, Consultant Dr. Rajib Ghosh, Santanu Debbarma, and Debashish Majumdar of the Land Port Authority of India. The annual tradition aims to strengthen ties between the two regions through food, trade, and cultural connection.
