Agartala: Tripura officials dispatched 600 premium Kew pineapples to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday. The fruit crossed the border through the Agartala-Akhaura Integrated Check Post. This gift serves as a symbolic gesture of friendship between the neighbors.
Tripura Agriculture Secretary Apurba Roy confirmed the move follows a recent delivery of mangoes from the Bangladesh government. The exchange aims to build goodwill. "We are sending 100 boxes of pineapple to Bangladesh as a goodwill gesture. This has been a tradition for the last several years," Roy said.
The shipment totaled 100 cartons, with each box holding six fruits. Every pineapple weighed roughly 780 grams. Officials selected the Kew variety because the Queen variety season concluded in July. While the Queen pineapple holds a GI tag, the Kew variety remains a staple of Tripura agriculture.
The handover occurred at the border zero point after customs formalities. Representing Tripura were Agriculture Secretary Apurba Roy, Director Dr. Phanibhushan Jamatia, consultant Dr. Rajib Ghosh, Shantanu Debbarma, and Land Port Authority staff Debashish Majumdar. Receiving the cargo for delivery were Assistant Consul Officer Pankajjyoti Das and official Sajib Chakraborty of the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chittagong.
