Pope Leo XIV Sets First Latin American Tour

Shillong: Pope Leo XIV heads to Latin America this November. He will tour Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17. The Vatican confirmed the schedule on Wednesday. This marks his first visit to the region as leader of the church.

The itinerary covers three stops in Uruguay: Montevideo, Paysandu, and Florida. He will also travel to Buenos Aires, Cordoba, and Lujan in Argentina. Peru gets four stops in Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa. He has deep roots there. The US-born pontiff spent decades in Peru as a missionary and church leader. He held the post of bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023.

His return to his former diocese in Chiclayo stands as a highlight of the trip. The Pope also holds Peruvian citizenship. In Argentina, Leo will visit the homeland of his predecessor, the late Pope Francis. Francis never made it back to Argentina during his 12-year papacy, despite many requests. Reporters noted that the visit is "especially significant because of Leo’s longstanding ties to Peru."
