Kohima: The BJP Youth Wing in Wokha took action to save Tsumang Lake on Sunday. Roughly 30 to 40 volunteers cleared grass and hauled away plastic, paper, and animal carcasses from the water and surrounding banks. The lake sits as a key ecological site for the town. It holds promise for recreation and income if leaders clean up their act.
Shanchothung A Ezung, the group's president, said the lake has suffered from years of neglect. He wants the District Planning and Development Board to step in with a formal protection plan. He also called for strict surveillance to stop the dumping of trash. Ezung is not against fishing, but he fears the use of certain nets could wreck the ecosystem.
"Maybe there can be some surveillance of the area," Ezung said. He believes regular checks could curb activities that harm the water or local environment. The team plans to make this cleanup an annual event to build on previous work like medical camps and seed distributions.
State Disaster Response Force members supported the effort by providing a boat and life jackets. The Wokha Town Council pitched in with a garbage truck. The group also credited state leader Khekato Awomi, national member Arvind Damani, and local councillor James Tungoe for their roles in sponsoring and assisting the project.
