Community Cleanliness Drives Target Dimapur and Wokha

Kohima: Over 120 members of Lhomithi Baptist Church swarmed the Supermarket area in Dimapur at 5 a.m. Friday. They cleared weeds and vegetation from drainage channels. The effort involved the Lhomithi Baptist Akukuhou, Colony Council, Sümi Totimi Loka, Youth Front, and Kiphimi Kuqhakulu. Pastor Toluho Chishi said the church started locally after a larger city-wide attempt failed three years ago. The team spotted broken slabs and open drains that threaten pedestrians. While Dimapur Municipal Council workers hauled away the debris, Pastor Chishi pressed authorities to fix potholes and crumbling pathways.

Simultaneously, the Lotha Youth Hoho spearheaded a massive cleanup at the Wokha Public Ground. Participants included the NPF Youth Wing, Team MLA 38 A/C Y.M. Humtsoe, BJP Wokha unit, Lotha Students’ Union, and the Tiyi Riders. Youths from Niropen Colony and Wokha Village joined forces with the Nepali Baptist Church and police personnel to scrub the area. This push sets the stage for the September 19 Penalty Shootout Tournament. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with the theme Shoot Goals, Not Drugs.

DMC chairman Hukheto Yepthomi praised the Dimapur volunteers. He urged citizens to step up, insisting that town maintenance is a collective burden. Across both events, a common sentiment emerged regarding the state of public sanitation. One participant noted, "We need to stop blaming the government alone. Our dirt is our responsibility too." Organizers emphasized that dumping waste in public spaces remains a significant problem. Moving forward, the Lhomithi church aims to host similar cleanup events once or twice every year.
