Kohima: Volunteers cleared thick overgrowth and whitewashed walls at the Old Naga Cemetery in Dimapur this week. The cleanup took place on October 24 and October 26. V. Khekato Awomi, a DMC councillor and BJYM Nagaland president, led the effort alongside the City Tower Business Owners Welfare Association and the Hazi Park Business Welfare Committee. They relied on local help instead of paid labor.

The site, established in the early 1970s, holds over 5,000 burials. Years of neglect had left the area choked with vegetation. Ninety-three people showed up to work on Saturday, followed by another 70 on Monday. Awomi said the initiative was necessitated by the poor condition of the cemetery and the need for regular maintenance.

Awomi thanked the business associations and volunteers for their contributions. He plans to make the cleanup a recurring event once or twice a year to keep the grounds tidy. He also urged families to take more personal responsibility for the upkeep of graves. Beyond this project, Awomi intends to launch two medical camps and other welfare programs in the coming months.
