Dimapur Councillor Clears Overgrown Old Naga Cemetery

Kohima: V Khekato Awomi, councillor for Ward No. 6, launched a cleanup of the Old Naga Cemetery in Lake View Colony, Dimapur. The grounds were overrun by tall grass and creepers. Maintenance had become a struggle for the Naga Council Dimapur. The council focused its limited resources on the New Naga Cemetery in Zani Village instead. It left the historic site in decay.

The NCD spent significant funds on herbicides during 2025. The weeds returned within months. NCD President GK Rengma and General Secretary LK Peter Anal labeled the site the "Sorrow of Naga Council Dimapur" due to the failed upkeep. They watched as hundreds of volunteers showed up to work with Awomi on the site.

The council previously relied on help from the Dimapur Pastor Fellowship and local tribe hohos for social work in the 2000s. That practice eventually faded. Awomi now wants to take over long-term maintenance duties. NCD officials plan to hold official talks to finalize the arrangement. The council is urging Dimapur residents to support the effort to honor those buried there.
