Chakhesang Students Union sets protest over delayed highway project

Kohima: The Chakhesang Students’ Union is launching a peaceful protest on October 7. The demonstration begins at 12 noon at Glory Peak Junction in Menyitsuda Colony, Pfutsero. Protesters are targeting the chronic delays plaguing the NH-29 two-lane Kohima-Jessami road project.

The union wants the immediate termination of the EPC contractor, M/s Ratna Infrastructure Projects Pvt. Ltd. They also want full accountability from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. The union decided on this action during an October 1 emergency meeting at the North Kikruma Multi-Purpose Hall.

This road acts as a vital artery for the Chakhesang community. It serves students, patients, traders, and local families every single day. The union noted the toll of the stalled work. "Lives have been lost, students continue to suffer, accidents have become a recurring reality, patients endure immense hardship while travelling for medical care, and businesses along the route are bearing heavy losses," the group stated.

Officials said that empty promises are no longer acceptable. They demand swift action instead of more extensions. All affiliated units must send at least 10 volunteers. Nearby villages should provide 20 volunteers each to bolster the turnout. The group is providing light refreshments for everyone who shows up to support the cause.
