Students Debate India's Economic Growth in Zunheboto

Kohima: Kaino I Yeptho of Olympic Higher Secondary School took first place at the District Level Debate Competition in Zunheboto. The event took place October 5 at the New Academy Building of Zunheboto Government College. Five schools faced off over the topic: India’s 7.8% GDP Growth Rate: Real Recovery or Statistical Illusion?

Students from Zunheboto Government College, Government Higher Secondary School, Immanuel Higher Secondary School, Cornerstone Higher Secondary School, and Olympic Higher Secondary School participated. They picked apart GDP calculations, consumer spending, inflation, and government output. Proponents pointed to service sector expansion and increased investment. Critics argued the numbers ignore stagnant household purchasing power and unemployment. The debate grew heated. Complex statistical methodology defined the arguments.

Judge L Chinglem Konyak, an Extra Assistant Commissioner from Satoi, praised the students for their research. He noted the participants managed to grapple with the Wholesale Price Index and National Statistical Office roles despite their age. Konyak said, "The topic required deeper analysis." He urged the students to keep debating to build their skills.

Kabo Kiba, General Secretary of NPF 35-Zunheboto Assembly Constituency, and Assistant Professor Tonoli S Awomi also judged the event. Aghato Zhimo kept time. Dr. Bendangtemjen opened the floor, and Kileto I Chishi moderated. Dr. Bolivi S Kiba closed the session after handing out certificates.
