Kohima: The All Sümi Students’ Union issued a 72-hour ultimatum to shut down all illegal liquor shops across Zunheboto. Action is coming. The union demands the immediate closure of these outlets, specifically targeting those positioned near educational institutions. They warned of further democratic and lawful steps if the district administration fails to act.
This ultimatum follows a Wednesday inspection alongside the Excise and Prohibition Department, Zunheboto. The team discovered contraband during an ongoing educational tour of the area. They seized 23 pieces of Kingfisher beer, 16 bottles of 180 ml McDowell’s liquor, and eight packets of Shikhar tobacco from shops near Government Higher Secondary School, Zunheboto. Officials later took possession of the goods for destruction under a court order.
SKK General Secretary P Samuel Chophy stated the union maintains “zero tolerance” towards liquor businesses operating near schools. The group cited threats to student safety and community discipline as primary concerns. They want full enforcement of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989, and strict compliance with Section 6 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, which forbids tobacco sales within 100 metres of schools.
The union also linked excessive alcohol use to the destruction of families and loss of life across the Naga homeland. “The SKK will not remain a silent spectator when illegal activities are allowed to operate around educational institutions,” the union said. They are now waiting for the district administration and law enforcement to clear the shops.
