Kohima: Zunheboto Government College launched a new Green Campus Initiative on August 12. The project uses a Community Social Responsibility model to boost conservation. The Zunheboto Forest Division and the college organized the effort. Deputy Commissioner Dharam Raj attended the launch as the special guest.
Divisional Forest Officer Obed Bohovi Swu said the project relies on community self-reliance. He argued that relying only on government schemes is not enough. The initiative focuses on the principle of we before me. It targets environmental health and community ownership. Success depends on the locals. The college was picked because it serves the entire district.
DC Dharam Raj praised the concept. He encouraged students to reject waste. He wants people to live simply. The program includes annual energy audits. It also covers water and environmental assessments. Findings from these audits will guide future campus work. The college also planted native tree species during the event.
Principal Dr. R. Bendangtemjen welcomed the project. He believes the campus can change. He expects the work to continue indefinitely. The faculty and students will lead the effort. “I am sure this initiative which we have launched today is going to bring some transformation in the college as well as in our society,” he said.
Assistant Professor Everkali W. Achumi led the invocation. IQAC Coordinator Tiasunep Ozukum delivered the vote of thanks. The project aims to act as a model for the entire region. Officials want the system to outlast their own tenures.
