New Silk Processing Unit Opens in Phek District

Kohima: Phusachodu village in Phek district secured a new training centre and silk processing unit this Monday. Zachivelu Khamo Dolie, Director of Sericulture for the Government of Nagaland, cut the ribbon. Kudecho Khamo, Advisor for CAWD, also attended the event. The state government financed the project through the 2023-25 State Plan under NABARD.

Dolie noted that sericulture remains a mostly women-driven field. Men are showing interest too. The department will provide training and ongoing support to ensure villagers can earn a steady income. It takes just three months to begin feeding silkworms once farmers establish their plants. Silk yields can generate income three to four times a year. Silk currently fetches roughly 3,000 rupees per kilogram, though the department aims to boost that price.

Dolie urged locals to stop relying solely on government jobs. She encouraged people to seek independent work. The department head pointed out that sericulture creates zero waste, as every product holds value.

Kudecho Khamo credited the project to the leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Advisor Imkongmar. He wants villagers to view the site as a hub for skill development and personal growth. He issued a firm directive to the community, saying, "Make proper use of the facility." He reminded residents that the village council and local leaders must protect the new asset.

Village Council Chairman Velapa Theluo delivered the opening remarks. Associate Professor Bedukho Chuzho ran the program. Rev. Velacuyi Khamo performed the dedicatory prayer. Training on Eri silk spinning and weaving began immediately. Classes will run until October 22.
