Kohima: The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Phek launched a training program for Self Help Groups to boost women's income. This initiative falls under the Women Empowerment Gender Budgeting plan for 2026-27. Twenty women attended the first session in Phek Town on October 14.
District Fisheries Officer Esther Angami led the workshops. Her team taught participants how to make fish pickles, fingers, balls, cutlets, and soup. The goal is to help women turn local fish into profit without expensive machinery. The training focuses on low-investment, high-output production methods.
Angami stressed the rising market hunger for simple, ready-to-eat meals. She told the attendees: "Such initiatives could help women access new markets, increase earnings and strengthen entrepreneurship." By diversifying their output, these women can start small-scale enterprises.
A second group of SHG members completed the same technical training in Meluri Town on October 15. The program aims to secure long-term livelihoods for women in the local fisheries sector.
