Jakhama Named Myki Village to Boost Women-Led Farming

Kohima: The Department of Women Resource Development picked Jakhama village in Kohima district as its Myki Village for the 2026-27 financial year. Officials launched the move at the Jakhama Village Panchayat Hall on October 15. MLA Kevipodi Sophie attended the event as the special guest.

This initiative expands the state government policy of one district, one product into a one village, one product model. It targets existing activities run by local women to scale up production and build better market links. The program specifically taps 80 women farmers, drawing ten from each of the village's eight khels. These growers will focus on expanding hybrid onion cultivation, as the crop already thrives in the local soil.

"The initiative aims to strengthen existing agricultural activities undertaken by women and improve production and marketing opportunities," according to the department. Leaders from the Jakhama Village Council, the Village Development Board, and the Jakhama Women's Organisation joined department officials for the rollout. The kickoff session included a formal program followed by a technical meeting. The department hopes this strategy bolsters women-led livelihoods and drives economic growth across the region.
